Anything you lose comes round in another form.\u201d &#8211; Rumi<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Yesterday was the anniversary of my best friend\u2019s passing.I have it marked in my calendar like a birthday because every year, especially on this day, I celebrate the friendship we had with deep gratitude.This year, the reminder popping up on my screen startled me. Between getting the flu and trying to wrap up a challenging semester at university, I had been busy.I had been lost in mundane struggles that we get lost in every day and the little green box with a shiny purple heart that appeared instantly made me pause.<\/p>\n<p><em>For a moment, I forgot what I was doing.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather; font-weight: 400; --tcb-applied-color: #000000 !important; color: #000000 !important; font-size: 16px !important;\">In my mind, I was transported back to middle school, where we first met, during a difficult time after my family moved from Germany to Canada.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px !important;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather;\"><span style=\"color: #000000 !important;\"><span style=\"--tcb-applied-color: #000000 !important;\">Our friendship spanned decades, encompassed all the ups and downs one can imagine teenagers and then young adults would go through, and was always the one thing I could count on when nothing else made sense.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px !important;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather;\"><span style=\"color: #000000 !important;\"><span style=\"--tcb-applied-color: #000000 !important;\">As I looked through old pictures and found myself laughing at some of the incredible adventures we had, something in me shifted.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather; font-weight: 400; --tcb-applied-color: #000000 !important; color: #000000 !important; font-size: 16px !important;\">This morning, my world had been dictated by illness, deadlines, logistics, and the next task in front of me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, I found myself in an entirely different state of awareness.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Something had opened up inside me. I was no longer in task mode. Everything went silent and yet I could very clearly hear my own heartbeat.The busywork that had consumed my entire morning suddenly felt absurd. Why did any of it matter when there is so much more to life?<\/p>\n<p>I felt gratitude for the friendship we had. Child-like cheekiness at the ridiculous adventures we survived together.<\/p>\n<p><em>For one breath, I was in perfect flow.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">My WhatsApp pinged, my phone rang, and more little green notification boxes appeared on my screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thejornipodcast.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 682px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 682\/171;aspect-ratio: auto 1000 \/ 250;\" title=\"The J\u014drni Podcast\" data-src=\"https:\/\/thejorni.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/The-Jorni-Podcast-Banner-0225.png\" alt=\"The J\u014drni Podcast\" width=\"682\" height=\"171\" data-id=\"3823\" data-init-width=\"1000\" data-init-height=\"250\" data-width=\"682\" data-height=\"171\" data-link-wrap=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I sat there, stunned, wondering what had just happened.<\/p>\n<p>Altered state of consciousness through meditation?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather; font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px !important; --tcb-applied-color: #000000 !important; color: #000000 !important;\">But I hadn&#8217;t meditated my way there. I hadn&#8217;t done breathwork or journaling or any of the practices I use with clients.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather; font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px !important; --tcb-applied-color: #000000 !important; color: #000000 !important;\">I had been yanked out of management mode by grief and memory, and suddenly everything I had been pushing so hard for all morning was just&#8230; there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Available. Effortless.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I had spent the entire morning pushing through tasks, managing my flu, and trying to stay on top of everything. And in one involuntary moment, everything I had been working so hard to access was just there.<strong>Flow. Connection. Presence. <\/strong>The very things we strive for through meditation practices, breathwork sessions, and nervous system regulation techniques had arrived the moment I stopped trying.I think about how often we approach these states as something to achieve. We schedule time for presence. We effort our way toward flow. We work hard at letting go.<\/p>\n<p>But what if it is exactly that effort that creates the resistance?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather; font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px !important; --tcb-applied-color: #000000 !important; color: #000000 !important;\">When we are in task mode, in management mode, or in survival mode, the nervous system is activated in a way that blocks access to the very states we are trying to reach. The harder we push to get there, the harder it becomes to access them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather;\"><span style=\"color: #000000 !important;\"><span style=\"--tcb-applied-color: #000000 !important;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px !important;\">Think about the last time you experienced unexpected flow or connection. Maybe it happened during a conversation you weren&#8217;t planning to have. Or in a moment when you were frustrated about something, stepped away, and all of a sudden it worked itself out.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather; font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px !important; --tcb-applied-color: #000000 !important; color: #000000 !important;\">What was happening right before that opening? Maybe you had been working through your email inbox, or prepping for your next meeting, or coordinating logistics with your team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>And what interrupted that pattern long enough for everything to become available again?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The paradox is that presence, flow, and connection are always there. I love it because it gives us power\u2014an agency over our lives. If we pay attention to our unconscious, we will gain the freedom to create freely.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897606\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897627\">But how do you uncover thoughts and beliefs that are so deep we've stopped noticing them?<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897640\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-19c93ef92da\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\">They are very hard to spot with awareness alone. They become our blind spots; they become our reality. They become the way we see the world, and what is reflected back to us as situations and circumstances.<br><br><\/p><p data-css=\"tve-u-19c93ef92dc\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\">I had a couple of those deeply rooted inside:<br><br><\/p><ul class=\"\"><li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f04e01\"><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather; font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px !important;\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f0643c\">There is fundamentally something wrong with me, no matter what I do.<\/span><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f04e02\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px !important;\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f06f95\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f0643d\"><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather;\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f0643e\">My needs are not as important as others'.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f04e04\"><span style=\"font-family: Merriweather; font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px !important;\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f06440\">When they are okay, I feel okay. When they are not okay, I have to fix it.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"dir=\" ltr\"\"=\"\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f03872\"><\/p><p data-css=\"tve-u-19c93ef92e0\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\">Now those lies are in the light. But when they were not, when they were running my life\u2026 Oh boy, I was in constant stress. I developed a very sensitive sense to spot other people's moods quite effectively. I could regulate them, distract them, soothe them before they even knew it. Natural caretaker from the age of 10.<\/p><p style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f08897\"><\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_contentbox_shortcode thrv-content-box\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897544\" data-ct-name=\"Number Box 1\" data-ct=\"stylebox-8968\" data-element-name=\"Styled Box\" data-form-settings=\"__TCB_FORM__{&quot;form_identifier&quot;:&quot;clone-of-unlearning-self-doubt-form-699eb2&quot;}__TCB_FORM__\">\n<div class=\"tve-content-box-background\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897550\" style=\"--tve-border-width: 2px; border-left: 2px solid rgb(153, 0, 204) !important;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tve-cb tve_empty_dropzone\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897574\"><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element tve_empty_dropzone\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897590\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e8975b5\"><em>But one day the lies started to crumble.<\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897640\"><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f10bbd\">The perfect world in which I could fix and heal people in exchange for love and acceptance literally stopped working. I got caught up in a relationship where I was giving and caring to my complete exhaustion and still felt unseen, unheard, and unloved. And I thought it was him who was just \"too big of a challenge for me.\" And then I got caught up in the same type of relationship again. And I left. Broken, worthless, disappointed, and totally numb. I literally lost the sense of who I was. I couldn't feel my body or my emotions, and I didn\u2019t know who I was.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897798\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e8977b2\"><strong>That's when I knew I had to change everything radically.<\/strong><\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_contentbox_shortcode thrv-content-box\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897544\" data-ct-name=\"Number Box 1\" data-ct=\"stylebox-8968\" data-element-name=\"Styled Box\" data-form-settings=\"__TCB_FORM__{&quot;form_identifier&quot;:&quot;clone-of-unlearning-self-doubt-form-699eb2&quot;}__TCB_FORM__\">\n<div class=\"tve-content-box-background\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897550\" style=\"--tve-border-width: 2px; border-left: 2px solid rgb(153, 0, 204) !important;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tve-cb tve_empty_dropzone\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897574\"><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element tve_empty_dropzone\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897590\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e8975b5\"><em>Those three lies were the most important pieces of information I found on my healing journey. <\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897709\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f2b7db\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\">But the funny thing is, they weren't hidden. In fact, those were my frustrations for years, and those thoughts were so loud and so intrusive that I created walls around them. Walls like \"Don't make anyone upset.\" \"Don't complain.\" \"Don't say you don't like it, that's rude.\" Other times, I was bending myself backwards and shrinking myself, so I didn't hear the inner discomfort\u2014the battle between my needs and theirs, or the discomfort of feeling like I was doing everything wrong. It sounded a bit like \"It's not that bad.\" \"I should be grateful for what I have.\" \"Maybe I'm overreacting.\" \"I need to be more flexible\/understanding\/patient.\"<br><br><\/p><p data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f2b7dd\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\">These thoughts are sneakier than the \"don't complain\" walls because they feel like self-awareness or maturity, when really, they were just another way of abandoning myself. They convinced me that the discomfort was the problem, rather than a signal that someone was crossing my boundaries.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897798\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e8977b2\"><strong>So how do you outsmart these clever ways your brain tries to protect you? And how do you break the habit of questioning yourself first before you question others?<\/strong><\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c9fab155b\" style=\"\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f2b7db\">You have to listen to your body, not your mind. You have to learn how to feel the sensations of your emotions inside your hands, stomach, jaw, and shoulders. Those sensations are signals of when you're stressed and when you're calm. They are your compass.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c9fab22c7\" style=\"\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f2b7db\">I started to notice the moments when I automatically reached to fix someone else's discomfort while ignoring my own. I began to practice sitting with that urge instead of acting on it. I learned to ask myself: \"Is this an impulse or a conscious choice?\"<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c9fab8ef0\" style=\"\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f44b9e\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\">Practical example: In the past, I could not stand the feeling of guilt. In other words, I would avoid it at any cost. Guilt is one way people can become easy to manipulate, and the other party becomes aware of this (consciously or unconsciously). \"Oh\u2026 but I was really looking forward to that. I'm sure you wouldn't cancel if you knew how much I want to see you,\" he says.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c9fab2b71\" style=\"\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f44b9e\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\">Or this one: \"I had a really rough day, and I really need you right now. I know you said you needed some alone time tonight, but\u2026 I guess I'll just deal with it on my own. Just notice how you feel inside when you hear an ultimatum, a compliment that is not flattering or a joke that is not funny. At this stage, just notice, don\u2019t judge, don\u2019t try to understand why or defend etc. But get good at noticing.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_contentbox_shortcode thrv-content-box\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897544\" data-ct-name=\"Number Box 1\" data-ct=\"stylebox-8968\" data-element-name=\"Styled Box\" data-form-settings=\"__TCB_FORM__{&quot;form_identifier&quot;:&quot;clone-of-unlearning-self-doubt-form-699eb2&quot;}__TCB_FORM__\">\n<div class=\"tve-content-box-background\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897550\" style=\"--tve-border-width: 2px; border-left: 2px solid rgb(153, 0, 204) !important;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tve-cb tve_empty_dropzone\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897574\"><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element tve_empty_dropzone\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897590\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897766\">Secondly, another important fact: We are all equal. There is no one who is born less lovable. Love is not earned. Love is not limited. Love is for everyone all the time.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e8977e3\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897808\">Step 2: Practice self-love and self-compassion. Your ability to feel love, to be loved, to love yourself cannot be taken away from you. Notice how this resonates. If you notice that for some reason you feel less than others, or less fortunate or that there is something wrong with you. It\u2019s not because it\u2019s true, it\u2019s because between you and your love for you lies an old wound, trauma or a myth. This can be removed. You can heal this, or you can ask for help.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_contentbox_shortcode thrv-content-box\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897544\" data-ct-name=\"Number Box 1\" data-ct=\"stylebox-8968\" data-element-name=\"Styled Box\" data-form-settings=\"__TCB_FORM__{&quot;form_identifier&quot;:&quot;clone-of-unlearning-self-doubt-form-699eb2&quot;}__TCB_FORM__\">\n<div class=\"tve-content-box-background\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897550\" style=\"--tve-border-width: 2px; border-left: 2px solid rgb(153, 0, 204) !important;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tve-cb tve_empty_dropzone\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897574\"><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element tve_empty_dropzone\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897590\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897849\">Lastly, fact: Emotions are not problems to fix. They are signals to listen to.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e8977e3\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897808\">Step 3: Get comfortable with the discomfort in your own body\u2014especially fear, guilt, and shame. You can start really small by feeling into the sensations, or work with a qualified practitioner. Over time, you will expand your capacity to feel more discomfort in your body and stand stronger during a conflict. Emotions will run your life if you let them. But freedom is learning to feel the emotion fully, let it move through you, and then make your choice from clarity.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897798\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e8977b2\"><strong>Emotional freedom doesn't mean I never feel guilt or fear anymore. <\/strong><\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e8977e3\"><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c93f85f06\">It means I can feel those emotions without letting them control my decisions. It means I can witness someone's disappointment without making it my emergency. It means I can say \"no\" and sit with the discomfort that follows, knowing I'm not responsible for managing their reaction. It means choosing myself isn't selfish\u2014it's necessary. That's the freedom: not the absence of difficult emotions, but the ability to feel them and still honour my own needs.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c9fac1a60\" style=\"\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897860\">The greatest gift of this journey has been discovering that I am worthy of love and acceptance, not because I make everything okay for everyone else, but simply because I exist.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element\" data-css=\"tve-u-19c9fac205c\" style=\"\"><p data-css=\"tve-u-699eb25e897860\">My needs matter. My feelings matter.
